Squirt is naturally flavored but contains less than 1% grapefruit juice. Like many other soft drinks, the packaging of Squirt has varied over the years. In 1983, Diet Squirt, the first soft drink in the United States to be sweetened with aspartame, was introduced.

Created in 1938 by Herb Bishop as an offshoot of Citrus Club, regional drink from Phoenix, AZ. Knowing the value of advertising, Bishop created Li'l Squirt in 1941 and word of this refreshing drink spread. In 1983, taking advantage of the new low-calorie soft drink technology, Squirt became the first soft drink in the US to use Aspartame.

 · The soft drink did well through WWII, because of its reduced sugar content, and in the 1950s, Squirt became a popular drink mixer. By the mid-1970s, Squirt was sold in Central and South America. In 1977, Squirt was bought by a Michigan bottler, Brooks Products, that went on to introduce a new product logo and a reformulated Squirt.
